Cheiro's reading of positive Mars includes a real warning. He wrote that people with high lower Mars are obstinate, resent criticism, are quick to temper, and can rush into conflict without thinking. Without a strong head line to govern the energy, they make complete muddles of their opportunities and the natural leadership they carry.

Cheiro also added, with characteristic bluntness, that such people are often prone to unhappy domestic lives — because they meet few partners who can understand their intensity without feeling overwhelmed by it.

The name "negative" is misleading in modern English — it does not mean bad. Cheiro used "negative" in the older sense of passive or mental, as opposed to the active physical Mars below.

Unlike the physical Mars, which produces the person who charges into fire, mental Mars produces the person who stands firm when others panic, who speaks truth when others stay silent, who thinks several moves ahead while everyone else reacts to the current move. Cheiro wrote that these people make excellent organisers, strategists, logistical planners, scientists, and medical minds, with a natural gift for leadership from a distance — the kind that thinks three moves ahead rather than rushing the front line.

This is the mount of the Stoic, the patient negotiator, the calm commander, the person whose inner ground does not move when the outer world shakes. In daily life, mental Mars is often invisible until it is needed — and then it is suddenly, obviously, the most valuable quality in the room.

The shadow of a high upper Mars: strategic cunning

Cheiro was careful to note the shadow of a strong mental Mars. When not cultivated on a higher plane, he wrote, these people employ cunning, craft, and treacherous means to achieve their ends. They can be deadly enemies, apparently assenting while waiting for the right moment to undermine.

Cheiro used the zodiac imagery of Scorpio to describe this shadow: the scorpion wounding its own tail in its lower form, the eagle soaring in its higher form. Both are real. If you recognise the lower version in your life — a tendency to keep score, to win arguments through patience rather than honesty, to poison situations rather than confront them — the growth is real work on integrity.

The Plain of Mars: the battlefield

The Plain of Mars — the hollow at the centre of your palm — is neither mount. It is the arena where Mars energy actually plays out. Classical palmistry reads the depth of this plain and the marks on it as indicators of the conflicts your life will produce.

A deep, hollow Plain of Mars is read as a life marked by significant conflicts — often within the family, or in a career that requires standing against opposition. A firm, level Plain of Mars (flush with the rest of the palm) suggests a life of fewer external battles. A raised Plain of Mars (rare) is read as a pugnacious temperament that may create conflicts where none needed to exist.

Specific marks on the Plain of Mars modify the reading:

Low or flat Mars mounts: the peaceable temperament

When both Mounts of Mars are flat or barely visible, classical palmistry reads this as a lack of pronounced fighting energy — both physical and mental. You are not naturally combative. You do not enjoy arguments, confrontations, or competitive dynamics, and you tend to withdraw from them when they arise.

This is neither good nor bad. It is a temperament. Some of the gentlest, most peaceable people in the world have flat Mars mounts and build careful, caring lives inside that gentleness — good teachers, patient caregivers, trusted mediators.

The two Mars mounts together

Reading the two Mars mounts in combination is where classical palmistry becomes specific:

• Both Mars mounts high: the complete fighter — physical courage and mental fortitude in one person. Rare. Often found on soldiers, emergency workers, and founders who built companies through long wars. Requires the most careful governance of all Mars configurations.
• High lower Mars + flat upper Mars: action without strategy. You will fight, but you may not plan. Pair with people who think before fighting.

Cheiro was insistent that Mars must always be read with the head line. The head line is the governing voice that decides whether Mars energy produces courage or merely destruction:

• Strong straight head line + high Mars: courage directed by clear thinking — the most useful configuration
